Rectal Examination in Men

Rectal examination is an internal examination of the rectum often performed by health practitioners to detect abnormalities in the pelvis and lower abdomen. It is suggested that individuals who are 40 years and older should have yearly rectal examination as part of the routine health examination. In digital rectal examination, the practitioner uses a lubricated gloved finger to feel for abnormalities in the rectum and surround structures. The examination typically begins with a visual inspection of the outside of the anal region for swellings, excoriations, hemorrhoids or fissures.  Such examination is show in the video. After the examination, the stool on the glove is also examined for abnormalities.

Rectal examination is one of the most common method used to screen for prostate abnormalities in men.
